The Power of Mindfulness in The Midst of Covid-19
There are so many stressors & changes that have arisen in our lives that weren't a worry before this pandemic. So it's only natural that people will feel an emotional toll. Taking care of ourselves is so important in times like these.
In the midst of all the Corona Virus chaos, it can be easy to forget that self-care is more than just caring for yourself physically, but also taking care of your mental wellbeing.
Applying mindfulness is a powerful strategy to help bring us back to the present moment and avoid overwhelming ourselves, and it's so simple to do! Mindfulness is available to us in every moment, we just have to acknowledge it...
Mindfulness is something I've been practising for some time now, and something I really believe in the benefits of! But I'm no medical professional, I repeat - I am no medical professional, so I've taken some information from HelpGuide, a nonprofit mental health and wellness website (where you can find lots more great information) to help shed some light on what mindfulness is, how it can help you, and how you can practice mindfulness too!
What is mindfulness?
"Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—and accepting it without judgment." HelpGuide, Benefits of Mindfulness
Scientists have found that mindfulness plays a key part in reducing stress and increasing people's overall happiness. By integrating mindfulness into our daily routines it's easier to savour the pleasures in life that we sometimes take for granted, be more engaged in whatever we're doing, and create a greater capacity to deal with adverse events. These things all contribute to a satisfied life. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past.
In recent years, psychotherapists have turned to mindfulness meditation as an important element in the treatment of a number of problems, including: depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, couples’ conflicts, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
How can I practice mindfulness?
There is more than one way to practice mindfulness, but the goal of any mindfulness technique is to achieve a state of alert, focused relaxation by deliberately paying attention to thoughts and sensations without judgment. This allows the mind to refocus on the present moment. All mindfulness techniques are a form of meditation.
Basic mindfulness meditation – Sit quietly and focus on your natural breathing or on a word or “mantra” that you repeat silently. Allow thoughts to come and go (try to do this without judgment or overthinking) and then return your focus to your breathing or mantra.
One of my favourite ranges that we carry, Intrinsic, loves nothing more than to create beautiful products that spark inspiration and infuse your soul with positivity! I've been drinking out of my Intrinsic Mindfulness Mug everyday lately, using the quote on the front - "The change in our lives, begins with the change in our minds" by Adele Basheer - as my daily mantra. I also acknowledge senses, like the smell and taste of my tea. Find the right Intrinsic Mug for you, and start practising your new mantra!
Body sensations – Notice any body sensations that you might be feeling, such as an itch or tingling, without judgment and let the sensation/s pass. Acknowledge each part of your body from head to toe.
Sensory – Notice sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. Name them... “sight,” “sound,” “smell,” “taste,” or “touch” without judgment and let them go.
Since washing my hands a lot more frequently has become an important part of my daily routine, I've really been enjoying Tilley's Soaps. They're a sensory delight! At the moment I'm using a Pink Grapefruit bar, so while I wash my hands I pay attention to the vibrant hot pink colour, the sound of the water running from the tap, the bittersweet, clean, fruity aroma of Pink Grapefruit as I lather the soap & let the Shea Butter and natural Vitamin E moisturise and cleanse my hands. These were only available in store but I have added them to our website so that no matter your location or situation, you can order some to arrive right at your doorstep!
Another product that I've been loving lately is my Anxiety Away Crystal Roller. We've only recently started stocking this range and it's already been very popular in store. It's definitely been my magic weapon lately! The essential oil crystal rollers connect both the powers of the crystal and the benefits of essential oil, creating the ultimate healer.
Anxiety Away is an essential oil blend that will help you alleviate apprehension by stimulating and balancing the mind & reduce anxiety with the calming and relaxing blend of Grapeseed Oil, Lavender, Rosewood, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang. I like to close my eyes and really inhale the calming scent.
Amethyst crystals are amazing! They're extremely powerful and protective with high spiritual vibration. Amethyst is a natural tranquilliser by blocking stress and negative energies. It also has strong healing and cleansing powers enhancing your spiritual awareness.
Just roll the Anxiety Away oil onto your skin using the Amethyst Crystal Roller. I roll onto my wrists & temples. Once you've used all the oil in the roller, you can just buy the refill dropper, which will fill your roller up to 3 more times! There are other oils & crystals available in the range. All our essential oils & crystal bottles are 100% genuine products.
I also think it's been good timing for Glasshouse to re-imagine their amazing range of home fragrances. If you're spending lots of time at home, there's nothing better than indulging in a dreamy candle! In case you haven't noticed, all of Glasshouse's fragrances are named after dreamy destinations. You can awaken to the fragrance of freesia, lavender, lime and moss; enlivened and relaxed, siesta satisfied. Still with some of the Amalfi sun and salt spray from before, and ready for more. Find yourself where the days sparkle like the sea and another Limoncello. I can honestly say I found it therapeutic typing up their product descriptions!
Emotions – Allow emotions to be present without judgment. Practice a steady and relaxed naming of emotions: “joy,” “anger,” “frustration,” this helps me truely acknowledge how I'm feeling. Accept the presence of the emotions without judgment and let them go.
Hopefully some of these tips can help you start practising mindfulness and help bring some comfort to these very uneasy times.
